National Gay Basketball Association Hall of Fame Nominations

Introduction

Thank you for nominating a special LGBTQ+ basketball Leader, player or supporter for consideration of induction into the NGBA Hall of Fame. Before completing the form, please be sure to review the eligibility criteria outlined below.

Nominations received by August 1, 2024 will be considered for induction for the class of 2024. The completed nomination form, picture, video, and any supporting materials must be submitted by 11:59 PM August 1, 2024, Pacific Time. Nominations received after this date will be considered for the following year.

The NGBA is dedicated to maintaining the legacy of LGBTQ+ and ally players, city leaders, and supporters who have paved the way for individuals to be who they are and play the game they love. The purpose of the National Gay Basketball Association Hall of Fame is to provide a historical perspective and honor the history of the LGBTQ+ basketball community around the world.

 

Criteria for Nomination Eligibility

General Eligibility


Any member of the NGBA, LGBTQ+ associated basketball organizations (domestic and international), living or deceased, including players, managers, coaches, referees, scorekeepers, sponsors, and fans, who have been active for at least seven years, are eligible for nomination to the Hall of Fame.
Nominees should have made significant contributions to their leagues and/or to the NGBA.

Notable exceptions are death and unforeseen relocation that prohibited a member from participating for a minimum of seven  years.

Nomination Process

Applications may be submitted by any person familiar with the candidate.

Nominated individuals who are not inducted will be automatically resubmitted for two additional years. After this three-year period, the nominator will be notified and asked to submit an updated application for the nominee.

 

Application and Voting Process

Application Submission

  • Nomination Form: Complete the mandatory nomination form.
  • Photograph: Include a photograph of the individual being nominated.
  • Optional Video: Submit a video (maximum 180 seconds) advocating for the nominee’s contributions. This video is not mandatory but strongly encouraged. Videos should be publicly accessible (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive).

Timeline

  • Submission Deadline: Nominations must be received by August 1, 2024, at 11:59 PM Pacific Time.
  • Ballot Preparation: The Operations team will prepare a ballot with the names of all nominees and distribute it to the voting members within 14 days following the nomination deadline.
  • Voting Period: Voting members will have 14 days from the date of ballot distribution to submit their votes.
  • Results Announcement: The Operations team will tabulate the results and notify the nominees, NGBA Officers, and living Hall of Fame candidates of the results.

 

Voting Members

Composition

  • A member from each class of the Hall of Fame for the past six years. Hall of Fame members must have been active in one of the past three National tournaments.
  • An NGBA Board Representative.

Voting Rights

Each eligible voter receives one vote only. (If someone is a Hall of Fame member and also holds an NGBA board position, they have two votes.) The vote for induction must be unanimous.

 

Induction Process

  • Selection Rubric: Nominees are selected using a rubric and voting process.
  • Committee: A committee of six (6) individuals selected by the President will be responsible for HOF selections.
  • Final Approval: The President will maintain final approval of the inductees.
  • Discussion Protocol: Voting members shall meet via teleconference annually to elect new Hall of Fame members. There is no set number of new inductees, but typically two to five new members are selected each year. Voting members may vote for a maximum of five nominees.

Application Materials

Nominating members must include the following:

  • A complete nomination form.
  • A photograph of the individual being nominated.
  • An optional video advocating for the nominee’s contributions (highly encouraged).

Video Submission Guidelines

  • Duration: Must be 180 seconds or shorter.
  • Accessibility: Must be created with a public link (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive).
  • Support: The video will assist the Hall of Fame members in understanding the nominee’s support from their local and national league.
