This is the best part of being part of the LGBTQ community. The best friendships of my life have come from being a part of this community and I have so much gratitude.

What first got you interested in playing basketball, and how did you find your way into the LGBTQ+ basketball community?

I’ve played basketball my entire life. From a little kid to playing Division One, basketball has been an integral part of my life. Once I finished playing at Radford University I was stationed in Virginia. I had no idea LGBTQ+ basketball was a thing until I was introduced to the DC Gay Basketball League. From there I joined the DC team and was then introduced into the NGBA.

Can you remember your very first game with an LGBTQ+ team? How did it go, and what do you remember most about it?

My first game with an LGBTQ+ team was much like any other game. I guess there was an extra element of passion there. What I remember most about it was the intense competition and will both teams had to win. It was definitely as intense and passionate as a collegiate basketball game.

Who has been your biggest inspiration or mentor in the LGBTQ+ basketball community, and why?

I would have to say Will Sheridan and Mark Chambers. I remember watching Will on ESPN telling his story of being a gay college basketball player and I could relate. It took a lot of courage to be on a national stage and share an identity, he represented many of us and he did it with remarkable class. Words cannot justify what Mark Chambers has done for our community. To create a great team and tournament experience that has brought together lifelong memories, friendships and comradery I am forever grateful. Him and the team has made it look easy but we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the consistent effort, time and sacrifice the tournament organizers put into each and every tournament.

What's your favorite memory from any of the LGBTQ+ basketball tournaments you've participated in?

My favorite memory is winning the last two championships and being inducted into the NGBA Hall of Fame. I’m honored to be a part of such a remarkable group of people.

Have you had any funny or unexpected moments on the court that you’d love to share with us?

Funny memory is when I tried to dunk Brandon Harris. He fouled me but didn’t expect me to jump that high. It was only because he kept scoring on my team… and it made me mad. Something had to be done.

What’s your pre-game ritual or superstition that you always follow before hitting the court?

One scoop of Pre-Workout [DRY].

Which LGBTQ+ basketball player, past or present, would you most like to play one-on-one with, and why?

I would want to play one-on-one with fellow Hall of Famer David Hall. He’s my best friend and a really good ball player. We have similar games but he definitely has more muscles than me.

If you could create an all-star team of LGBTQ+ players from any era, who would be on your dream team?

Mikey S, Will S, David H, Mario M, Desmond M, Rafa, Buckets, Brandon, Ben P, Wendell, Gabe C, Sterlin, Chad M, JC, Luie, Brandon M, Kevin J, Brandon C, Peter C, Brandon R… Clearly I have 2 All-Star Teams LOL

How has being part of the LGBTQ+ basketball community impacted your life off the court?

Goodness. This is the best part of being part of the LGBTQ community. The best friendships of my life have come from being a part of this community and I have so much gratitude.

What's one piece of advice you would give to young LGBTQ+ athletes just starting out in their basketball journey?

There will be a new tournament champion every quarter. It’s the relationships and memories you make. A game is 40 minutes, a friendship is forever. Compete and win but don’t lose sight of the connection that will last a lifetime. Have fun, laugh and love… don’t take it too seriously because one day we will all walk away from the game. When that happens, all you have left is the relationships you’ve built. I love you!
