HomeTournament Division and Seeding Guidelines

This guide outlines the process by which tournament organizers determine championship brackets. This process is intended to create competitive tournaments while considering the enjoyment of all players.

  • Tournament organizers determine available divisions and maximum number of teams.
  • Teams self register for the division they think their team will be competitive in:
    • Division A [All Gender/Women’s+]: Advanced basketball knowledge (IQ) and athletic skill; competed (coached) in organized basketball: high school, college and up
    • Division B+ [All Gender]:  Advanced basketball IQ and athletic skill; competed (coached) in organized basketball: high school, college and up. Teams lacking size inside the key
    • Division B [All Gender/Women’s+]:- Significant athletic skill and basketball IQ
    • Division B- [All Gender] : Either good athletic skill and some basketball IQ or good basketball IQ and some athletic skill
    • Division C [All Gender/Women’s+]: Some athletic skill and basketball IQ
    • Division D [All Gender]: Novice; emerging athletic skill and basketball IQ
    • Tournament organizers reserve the right to adjust team divisions based on registration information & previous tournament history. Tournament organizers will discuss potential changes with captains.
  • Saturday pool play: The intention is for teams to play within their division. Depending on registrations, some cross divisional games might be necessary for all teams to play a minimum of 3 games.
  • Having observed the teams play in their self selected division, the tournament organizers will finalize the divisions for the championship brackets. Tournament organizers may move teams to different divisions to balance competitiveness in each of the divisions. Tournament organizers will discuss potential changes with captains.
  • Once divisions are finalized, seeding will be based on win/loss record; ties will be broken first by head to head, then by overall point differential, then by points allowed, then by points scored.
  • Sunday championship: single elimination. Each team is guaranteed to play 1 game. Divisions with 8 or more teams will split into upper and lower brackets.
  • Teams will be placed into brackets using the following templates:
