The Austin Gay Basketball League (AGBL) will make history as it begins its inaugural season Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the Austin Sports Center. The league, created to provide a welcoming environment to all LGBT people and their allies, is the first of its kind in Austin and in the state of Texas.
The AGBL was founded in February 2010 to create a welcoming environment to all LGBT people and their allies who are interested in playing basketball, building friendships, and giving back to Austin’s community and to promote an athletic environment free of discrimination. The first pick-up game was held March 28, 2010 at the basketball courts near Walnut Creek Park with 6 attendees, 4 male and 2 female. Since then, the AGBL has seen rapid growth and continues to add new members each month.
The Fall 2010 Season begins this Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the Austin Sports Center at 425 Woodward St., Austin, TX. This season features five coed teams with one division and runs for six weeks, ending on Thursday, October 28, 2010. Games are scheduled from every Thursday with start times of 7 PM and 8 PM. Opening day will begin at 7 PM with two 20-minute exhibition games, Opening Ceremonies at 7:40 PM, followed by three more 20-minute exhibition games. There will be a post-game event at Ruby’s BBQ at 512 W 29th St, Austin, TX. All games and events are free and open to the public.
